Welcome to Part II of the Meme Series about Endometriosis and Chronic Pain. For a topic that can be so serious, sad and draining you would think all was doom and gloom forever. On the contrary, sometimes it can feel so comforting knowing there is a whole group of women out there who completely understand your pain and all that accompanies it. You aren’t alone.
What is Endometriosis?
What is endometriosis? Basically, endometriosis is when cells grow outside of the uterus on the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes or elsewhere. While there can be a genetic component, other factors include immune and thyroid dysfunction, gut imbalances and nutritional deficiencies.
Some of the most common symptoms include massive pain during the period, irregular menstrual cycle, hormone imbalance, spotting, infertility and bloating. Endo belly and endo flare-up are common terms known by women in the endometriosis community because their occurrences are so common.
Roughly 1 in 10 women in the US have this condition with other countries reporting similar rates according to Endometriosis.net.
Many women try for years to get a diagnosis explaining their symptoms. Laparoscopy is the only official way Western medicine has to diagnose this condition.
It’s a problem for enough people to have a month dedicated to its awareness. March is Endometriosis Awareness Month.
