Today I’m going to cover some of my favorite non-toxic laundry detergent from 2022 that you should know about in order to lessen your body’s toxic load. Perhaps you are quite aware of the external toxic load you face on a daily basis and know a bit about man-made toxins being endocrine disrupters. Perhaps this is news to you. In either case, join me as I present some research indicating how women with endometriosis generally have a higher toxic load than the ‘average’ woman and what you can do about it.

In case you’ve just started following my blog, don’t forget to check out my review of the best non-toxic water bottles. Traditional water bottles are full of chemicals that can leach into your drinking water and begin to settle in your body. In this blog, I cover an array of products that are healthier for your body along with the research backing my claims. In any case, I’ve switched to these products and from doing all of the things I am healthier than ever and most importantly pain free.

Getting back to the non-toxic laundry detergent focus. Most commercial made laundry detergents contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can leach, migrate and off-gas into the rest of your home. You may unwittingly inhale or ingest the fumes anywhere in your home and especially where they are most concentrated. We don’t know the long-term effects that many of these products have on us, but we do know that they seem to pose some risk to our bodies.

What is more, some of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals have been shown to lead to the development of endometriosis. Wonderful, huh? But wait, there’s more. Another research synthesis from 2020 found that many endocrine disrupters somehow impact endometriosis and women who experience the related symptoms. Therefore, it’s really important to reduce your exposure as much as possible from the chemicals that can cause harm and those time tested substances which are considered safe to use.

This list of laundry chemicals are considered unsafe and should be avoided where possible (1):

  • Alkylphenol ethoxylates
  • Ammonia
  • Artificial/synthetic frangrances (parfum)
  • Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
  • Galaxolide
  • Monoethanolamine (MEA)
  • Petroleum distillates (napthas)
  • Phosphates
  • Phthalates
  • Optical brighteners
  • Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats)
  • SLES
  • Tonalide
  • Triclosan (antibacterial)

The list can seem pretty overwhelming until you understand just how clean your clothing can get with simple and more natural products. Oh, don’t forget how eco-friendly clean laundry detergent can be as well for the environment. So, let’s jump into my top picks!

What are the best non-toxic laundry detergents for endometriosis in 2022?

Let’s get ready to rummmmble and tumble

After much research and evaluation I’ve come up with my list of the cleanest and most easily accessible healthy laundry detergent. Much of my research comes from the Environment Working Group’s verified products list. These verified products are considered a gold standard for non-toxicity and contain legit healthy ingredients suitable for people especially the vulnerable. Research has already shown the harm certain chemicals can have on asthma and on reproduction. I also check many other sources for the real scoop on how the product performs especially if I haven’t used it before.

(1.) AspenClean Laundry Detergent

non-toxic laundry detergent aspenclean

The AspenClean laundry detergent has rave reviews and for good reason. Not only was it given the highest seal of approval by the EWG but because it’s a healthy laundry detergent. This is no small feat and does give a boost of transparency and confidence in the product. It’s vegan, not tested on animals and all of its materials are 100% biodegradable meaning its great for the environment and leaving a small eco footprint. It’s also made in the USA and baby and pet safe. No more Mr. Yuk stickers needed! Even the container it comes in is biodegradable.

  • Healthy laundry detergent safe enough for humans and furry friends
  • Environmentally friendly and made in the USA
  • No synthetic fragrances or parfum
  • Given the highest rating for safety by EWG and certified by EcoCert a clearinghouse for organics

Bottom Line

This seems like a wonderful product to try out based upon the ingredients used. It’s not the most economical brand out there and unfortunately the most economical brands aren’t really helping us endo warriors out much with all of their cheap toxins. Customer review are mostly positive though some have complained that it does not dissolve well. (I wonder if they need to pre-dissolve the pods or something in warm water?) Let me know if you do use/like this product. I’m all about non-toxic laundry detergent here but it can be frustrating if the detergent doesn’t work as expected.

(2.) Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder

Molly’s Suds healthy laundry detergent

Molly’s Suds has been growing in popularity and for good reason. It is comprised on only 5 ingredients, has nice scents from essential oils, and seems to be sensitive enough for people with sensitive skin or other related complaints. There are plenty of people raving about this product which instills confidence. Further, the founder of Molly’s Suds is a mom and pediatric nurse who lost her daughter tragically (I’m unclear of the reason) and embarked on clean living research to discover why this happened. I love a good mission like that.

The product seems to be able to work well is any type of laundry machine (regular or high efficient models) and while it does work well in cold water the instructions say to dissolve the powder in warm water (initially I guess?) which makes sense and seems to alleviate the streaky clothes problem found in some other powder detergents.

  • Rated A+ by the Environmental Working Group
  • Fairly economical for a non-toxic laundry detergent powder
  • Wonderful smell (not from parfum)
  • The product seems to work as expected

Bottom Line

This product just instills confidence to me. I love the rave reviews backed by the Environmental Working Group’s A+ score. I love that it seems to clean well and smells great to boot. And I love that the company came about of a problem the owner needed to solve. Overall I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on this brand.

(3.) Attitude Little Ones Laundry Detergent

This laundry detergent is also given the Verified status by Environmental Working Group, which is the gold standard for non-toxicity and being environmental friendly. it is free of the toxins listed above in this post and it is fragrance free. Check out the non-toxic detergents for babys because sometimes they are better for adult people too. Again this detergent also is ok with any type of laundry machine and hasn’t been tested on pets.

  • Non-toxic especially for the sensitive as Verified by EWG
  • Contains none of the ingredients listed in the toxic category above
  • Non-irritating

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a very healthy laundry detergent, this might be it. On the face this seems like a great product, and can be easily found online at least. However, I did notice that customers weren’t so thrilled about the product not being as effective as hoped for with stain removal. If you typically don’t get very messy then this product will probably do just fine. However if you have a lot of stains on a regular basis you will need to do a lot of pretreating with this product.

(4.) My Homemade Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

I have to say, I’ve tried many free and clear laundry detergents over the years thinking that I was helping myself out. Only to find that these products contain well the some stuff. Some of these products I might call “runners up” because they try to be clean but still have some things that make me scratch my head. However, if you are into doing do-it-yourself type projects, have the time and want to save money then you will love this homemade from grandma recipe.

What sold me on making my own laundry detergent? I wanted a lot more control in my product, it came with good reviews and it was going to save me money. In the past I was simply too busy to be making my own products but I have since started slowly dabbling. So, I totally get it if you purchase a verified green laundry detergent. I always think it makes sense to have some on backup anyways in case your experiment goes sideways.

  • Very affordable
  • You control the ingredients and they are all common household cleaning items that are easy to find and non-toxic of course.
  • The amount you make is abundant. This recipe will yield 5 gallons which I estimate enough to last me about a year or so maybe longer.

Yield: 5 Gallons
Cost: 10

  • 1 5 gallon bucket you'll need a lid
  • 1 bar of castile soap you could also use liquid castile soap
  • 1 essential oil I used lemon but use your favorite scent
  • 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup borax

  • If you have a bar of castile soap, shred it and warm it up in a saucepan with 2 cups of water until it melts. As it melts keep it to medium heat and keep an eye on it.
  • Fill a 5 gallon bucket half way with warm water.
  • Add 1/2 cup washing soda
  • Add 1 cup Borax
  • Add melted soap -OR- use an equivalent amount of liquid castile soap as the bar
  • Add your essential oil (about 20-30 drops)
  • Let sit overnight with the lid on.
  • Stir in the morning with an immersion blender or drill (that you would use to mix paint).
  • Use 1/2 cup for all loads in cold or warm water. I use more when the load is extra smelly. That's it!

If you use hard castile soap, don’t worry too much if the soap coagulates a bit when you add it to the water. I still need to stir my batch a bit before each wash. The smell is amazing. My clothes come out clean, smell fresh and I have zero complaints.

Bottom Line

This recipe is super easy to follow and I have 100% no complaints about my wonderful non-toxic laundry detergent for endometriosis. If you are looking to go down this road with me, here are the products that I would recommend for you. And yes you can get them in much smaller quantities but you will use these products for so many things that I’d recommend a larger quantity:

Castile Soap

Washing Soda

Those are my top picks for the best non-toxic laundry detergent for endometriosis in 2022. Three of the products are ones I would recommend because of the more natural ingredients, the high praises from the Environmental Working Group’s research findings and my own experience.

The next time you are going through your home and begin de-cluttering make sure to also de-clutter the bad-for-your hormones products that might be currently off-gassing in your home. These products seriously can make you ill and can appear so harmless. I am still in the process of making substitutions in my own home so make sure to give yourself grace. It takes time, energy and effort. If you’ve stuck around with me until the end, pat yourself on the back! I just know you are serious about turning your health around. Stay with me girl!

Alright, do you have a favorite non-toxic laundry detergent? If you try any of the above, please let me know in the comments section how you like them!
